Around the world
without flying

// A mad thing I did once upon a time.

Back in 2011, I left my hometown in Ireland to embark on a 3.5-year trip around the world without flying.

Along the way I visited 37 countries, crossed the Pacific Ocean on a cargo ship, and wrote a book.

Videos

// I've been known to put together the odd video from time to time.

  • 7 Years As A Digital Nomad

1M+ combined views on YouTube and Facebook.

  • Dancing Across the Pacific Ocean on a Cargo Ship

The video most likely to embarrass my grandkids.

  • How Much Does It Cost To Live In Amsterdam?

Had a lot of fun putting this one together.

  • Hiking To Punto De Teno In Tenerife

Challenged myself to tell this story without words.

Momentos

// Momentos = short personal diary entries I've written daily since 2013. Full archive here .

July 2026 Edition

  1. 5 Jul 2026

When was the last time I slept outside? It’s been a while. First occasion that comes to mind: in the jungle a few hours from Manaus, twelve years ago now. We slept in hammocks and awoke to the sound of distant howler monkeys. Nice that I can go back and read what I wrote that day.

  2. 31 Jul 2026

Walk past a willow tree here in Andorra, think nothing of it. But willow trees are where aspirin originated. Ancient civilizations used dried willow bark to lower fevers and reduce pain. Several distinct civilizations figured it out independently somehow. I find that fascinating.
